
Egypt - World health organization (WHO) has declared that heat waves which are covering Sahara area from March 15killed more than 100 children in 10 countries in Africa; 19 in Western Sahara, 16 in Chad, 13 in Sudan, 11 in Niger, 9 in Algeria, 8 in Mauritania, 8 in Libya, 5 in Tunisia, 3 in Egypt and 2 in Morocco. The major cause of death is children cannot endure a long time of the very high temperature.
From a meteorology survey, it shows that this year the temperature increase 4 degree Celsius compare to the same time of the last year. The humidity is low and the water in oasis is shallower than it was before.
“While I was holding my little son in my arms and feeding milk to him. He breathed slowly and stoped breathing, so I cried. He left me.” Mrs. Ukokwu Akuna, a Nigerian, said.
A senior official in world health organization who has responsibilities for Africa countries declared a state of catastrophe “Parents and guardians should be more take care their children. Do not allow children to stay outdoors for a long time. People should live in the flow atmosphere and drink a lot of water.
A teacher at a primary school in Morocco told that students were weak in afternoon due to the hot weather. For kindergarten children, they have a rest in afternoon and outdoors activities were curtailed. School also provided vitamin and water to children.
Mr. Ali Husain who works in Tunis said that his office changed working hours to avoid the high temperature in daytime. He is working for two shifts per day, first 7am to 11am and second 4pm to 8pm.
The Africa continental Meteorological Department reported that heat waves will cover Sahara area for 3 weeks in daytime, after that people should prepare to face with sand storms in summer.
